Occupational Therapy is a vital healthcare profession that focuses on helping people engage in the activities that matter most to them. Whether it's getting dressed, cooking a meal, playing sports, or participating in the workforce, occupational therapists support individuals in overcoming barriers that limit their ability to perform everyday tasks. The goal of OT is to enable people of all ages to lead fulfilling, independent lives by enhancing their physical, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing.
Occupational Therapy (OT) has a complex history that's not easy to trace. Its core principles are intuitive and have been integrated into medical treatment for centuries. However, OT as we know it today began to take shape in the early 1900s. Around 1915, Eleanor Clarke Slagle - often called "the mother of occupational therapy" - organised the first educational program for OT professionals. This marked a major turning point in the field's development and its recognition as a legitimate medical discipline.
World War I played a pivotal role in OT’s growth, as the profession responded to the physical and mental injuries soldiers sustained during the war. This period also saw a rising awareness of the importance of meaningful activities in mental health care. The profession expanded its focus to include not only physical recovery but also social and emotional wellbeing. Today, OT is widely recognised for its holistic approach, supporting individuals in achieving their personal goals, whatever they may be.
At Pacific Health & Wellbeing (PHW), we are proud to offer a comprehensive range of Occupational Therapy services designed to enhance the quality of life for our participants. Our dedicated team of occupational therapists are passionate about providing personalised, creative, and sometimes quirky approaches to therapy, ensuring that participants of all ages - from children to adults - are supported in achieving their goals.
Our Occupational Therapists prioritise enhancing participants' daily activities, focusing on safety and enjoyment in everyday tasks. Whether it's assisting with personal care routines, navigating community spaces, or improving leisure and recreation activities, our therapists are committed to helping individuals gain independence and confidence. We embrace creativity in our work and aim to make therapy both effective and enjoyable.
Our FCA reports offer a detailed understanding of an individual’s functional capacity, showcasing their abilities and needs in day-to-day life. These comprehensive, participant-centred reports are designed to help participants access the appropriate level of support and NDIS funding, ensuring their needs are met.
For participants with complex housing and support needs, we conduct home and living assessments to evaluate eligibility for supports such as Independent Living Options (ILO), Supported Independent Living (SIL), and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). Our detailed reports provide strong evidence to support NDIS applications, ensuring participants have access to the right services.
Our team is experienced in conducting thorough assistive technology assessments to identify the best tools for each participant’s unique needs. We assess, trial, and prescribe a wide range of assistive technology solutions, from low-cost items like shower chairs to high-cost custom-scripted power wheelchairs. We work closely with local providers to ensure a seamless process, helping participants regain independence and engage more fully in life.
We specialise in assessing and recommending home modifications that enhance safety and independence in daily activities. Whether it’s installing grab rails, ramps, or redesigning bathrooms and kitchens, our team ensures that participants' homes are suited to their individual needs and that they can live as comfortably and independently as possible.
Our capacity building therapy services are tailored to meet the specific goals of our participants. We develop personalised therapy plans that may focus on building skills for daily living, emotional regulation, motor development, or sensory processing. Whether in our fully equipped clinics, through mobile services, or via telehealth, we work collaboratively with participants and their support networks to help them reach their full potential.
At PHW, we are committed to making high-quality occupational therapy services accessible to as many people as possible. Our OT services are available across Brisbane, Darwin, Gold Coast, and Toowoomba, offering in-clinic, mobile, and telehealth appointments to meet the diverse needs of participants.
We believe in empowering people to live meaningful lives, and through Occupational Therapy, we help participants overcome challenges and reach their goals, no matter what they may be. This OT Week, we celebrate the incredible impact that Occupational Therapy has on people's lives, and we are proud to be part of that journey at PHW.
